Sing & Swing Week celebrates the human voice in all its many colors. Become part of an infectious spirit that allows spontaneity and creativity in a friendly, encouraging and diverse community. Discover, explore, expand, and deeply enjoy your singing with a plethora of classes ranging from skills and technique classes to repertoire and choral singing. The program also features development of singing-related skills like dancing, t’ai chi, vaudeville, stuntology, juggling, and instrumental classes. Mornings offer a wide variety of classes to stretch your voice, dance muscles and imagination with master teachers. Experience the power and potential of your voice through an Irish ballad, Appalachian duet, African chorus, folk choir, or a simple round in a song circle. Follow through on that resolution to learn to dance, or sharpen your already developed dance skills with contra, swing, African and percussive movement classes. Develop an inner sense of balance and peace with Qi Gong and T’ai Chi, or take advantage of individual staff tutorials in mandolin, guitar, bass, accordion, banjo or fiddle. Sing & Swing Week presents opportunities to discover, uncover, and maybe recover something deep inside yourself. After lunch, we meet for a Community Gathering & Sing. There you will have the chance to hear more music from the staff and we’ll have a chance to hear you, should you want to teach a song or give a mini-performance. Be sure and arrive on time as each gathering will begin with master stuntologist Sam Bartlett. The Community Gathering flows into the Swannanoa Chorus, where we blend our voices into a glorious choir. Each day will be led by different members of our fabulous vocal staff, so you will have a chance to sing with everyone. In the afternoon, you can join a band – be it swing, old-time, jazz, country, or blues; sing in an a capella group; become part of the vaudeville show or take time out to get a massage (for an additional fee). After dinner there will be song circles led by our vocal staff, with opportunities for everyone to lead or suggest songs. Evenings offer an opportunity to kick back or kick up your heels with dances featuring many styles of music – everything from contra and swing to cabaret, blues and rock ‘n roll. Bring your sequins & high heeled sneakers to celebrate in style with our extraordinary dance band. The week ends Friday evening with a gala show put on by all the classes that want to share what they’ve worked on during the week. After the performance, a party and dance close out the evening and the week’s activities. Sing & Swing Week is a time to revive your inner voice and experience the rich cultural traditions of the world surrounded by kindred spirits in the Swannanoa Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. What the world needs now is singing, sweet singing! Sing & Swing Week runs concurrently with our Dulcimer Week, and students may take classes in either program. Our Children’s Program for ages 6-12 features kids’ activities scheduled during all the daytime class sessions, and evening childcare at no additional charge. You can view classes here as well as staff bios. Or go directly to an individual instructor’s bio by clicking one of the names to the right.
