Our newest program, Traditional Song Week, realizes a dream of a comprehensive program completely devoted to traditional styles of singing. Unlike programs where singing takes a back seat to the instrumentalists, it is the entire focus of this week, which aims to help restore the power of songs within the larger traditional music scene. Here, finally, is a place where you can develop and grow in confidence about your singing, and have lots of fun with other folks devoted to their individual song journeys. Come gather with us to explore various traditional song genres under the guidance of experienced, quality instructors. When singers gather together, magical moments are bound to happen!
For our third year, Traditional Song Week is proud to present a gathering of highly influential singers and musicians who have remained devoted over the years to preserving and promoting traditional song. We will have the opportunity to honor a living legend on his 82nd birthday with a special performance and LIVE interview with Charlie Louvin of the famous Louvin Brothers duo, star of the Grand Old Opry, and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Community Gathering time will highlight the Child Ballads, as ballad authority Brian Peters comes all the way from England to join us, and we’ll also celebrate the life and work of Pete Seeger through film, stories and songs. The program will feature classes in bluegrass, Louvin Brothers songs, American roots, blues, gospel, old-time country & honky-tonk, songs from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, French Canadian and Cajun songs, English folk songs and Child Ballads, songs in Irish, Irish myth and legend, NC mountain ballads, Northern ballads, shape-note singing, duet harmony, Pete Seeger songs, traditional family songs, dance calling and traditional dance styles and more. The week will also feature nightly concerts and singing sessions, the Old Farmers Ball dance, a honky-tonk jam and dance night, a children’s program, ample opportunities to mix with Fiddle Week participants and many occasions for community singing in various genres. By special request and to add an element of fun, this year will offer a dance class, providing yet another way of bringing Traditional Song Week and Fiddle Week together. Traditional Song Week runs concurrently with our Fiddle Week, and students may take classes in either program. You can view classes here as well as staff bios.
